Thursday, November 14 at approximately 12:21 pm:

E2 and E11 were dispatched on a report of an excavator on fire at a construction site.  E2 and E11 arrived at the entrance and made contact with construction personnel who advised that the excavator was on fire in the woods close to a gas line.  E2 continued responding to the scene but were stopped due to difficult terrain.  E11, the City’s new mini-pumper, was able to continue to the scene without issue due to its small size.  BFR personnel used a 1 ¾” foam handline to extinguish the fire.  Because the call was located in the automatic aid zone, Franklin FD also responded to the scene.  Once the fire had been extinguished and all hazards had been addressed, BFR and FFD units returned to service

Sunday, November 17 at approximately 4:29 pm:

E2 was dispatched on a medical call for a report of a patient possibly having a stroke.  E2 arrived on scene and found an unresponsive patient.  E2 immediately began providing advanced life support including cardiac monitoring.  Once the patient was stabilized, BFR personnel began assessing the patient and preparing for transport.  The patient’s responsiveness improved rapidly during the assessment due to E2’s care.  EMS arrived on scene and the patient was moved to the ambulance.  EMS transported the patient emergency traffic to a local hospital with one member of E2 aboard to assist with further patient care.

Monday, November 18 at approximately 2:06 am:

E1 was dispatched on a report of a vehicle fire on I-65 southbound.  While responding, Dispatch notified E1 that a person was possibly trapped in the vehicle at which time E1 requested E2 to respond to the scene for assistance.  E1 arrived on scene to find one vehicle off the roadway, on its passenger side, fully involved in fire.  BPD was on scene and had located one person outside of the vehicle with burn injuries.  E1 personnel began patient care, while others pulled 1 ¾” foam handline and extinguished the fire while checking the vehicle for any additional occupants.  E2 arrived on scene and provided additional manpower for both operations while C3 assumed command of the incident.  The fire was quickly extinguished and it was confirmed that the vehicle had no other occupants.  EMS arrived on scene and the patient was transported emergency traffic to a local hospital with 1 firefighter aboard to assist with care.  Once all hazards had been addressed, control of the scene was transferred to BPD and all BFR units returned to quarters.

BFR Training Burn on Split Log Road

Brentwood Fire and Rescue recently completed a training burn in an acquired structure on Split Log Road. From time to time BFR is able to work with property developers who need to have a building razed, allowing the department to conduct valuable training while saving the developer some of the demolition costs.  In addition to members of Brentwood Fire and Rescue, both the Nolensville Volunteer Fire Department and the Williamson County Rescue Squad were invited to send crews to participate. Training together in acquired structures allows firefighters to hone their craft under realistic and closely monitored live fire conditions with no risk to citizen life or property.  Photos of crews performing interior operations are difficult to come by, as cameras do not typically fare well inside a burning structure, but firefighters operated both inside and outside the building throughout the day.  Please enjoy these photos, and click on any of them for a larger view.

Fire Chief's Briefing for November 2 through November 7, 2013

Here is a summary of Brentwood Fire and Rescue’s emergency responses for the period of November 2 through November 7, 2013.

We responded to 43 emergency calls for service.

These calls can be broken down into the following categories:
Fire: 1
EMS/Rescue: 27
Hazardous Condition: 2
Service Call: 3
Good Intent: 4
False Call: 6

Here is an overview of significant events from this period’s activities:

Saturday, November 2 at approximately 5:49 pm:
E2 was dispatched on a report of injuries from a fall. Upon arrival crew members found one PT lying on the ground complaining of leg pain. A rapid trauma assessment was performed which indicated injuries to the mid-thigh with a high suspicion of a closed fracture. EMS arrived on scene and PT care was transferred. E2 assisted EMS with establishing an IV to administer pain medication prior to moving the PT. The injured extremity was secured to the spine board before the PT was loaded into the ambulance for emergency transport to an area hospital.

Tuesday, November 5 at approximately 8:56 am:
E3 was dispatched on a reported commercial fire alarm. While enroute the call was upgraded to a full structure fire and all BFR units were dispatched after on-scene employees of the business confirmed a small fire in the utility room. E3 arrived on scene and made contact with the manager who stated that when he investigated the cause of the alarm he found flames travelling up the wall in the area of the water heater. The manager used buckets of water to extinguish the flames. E3 investigated and determined that the fire was out before staging all other responding units. Crew members utilized positive pressure ventilation fans to remove the smoke from the structure before investigating the cause of the fire. The fire was determined to have been caused by a combination of combustible materials improperly stored too close to the water heater as well as by the gas burner on the water heater igniting with too large a flame. With no further hazards all companies were released from the scene to return to quarters.

Tuesday, November 5 at approximately 6:19 pm:
E2, R1 and C3 were dispatched on a report of a PIA with entrapment. Upon arrival crew members found two vehicles involved in a T-Bone style collision with one PT pinned in the vehicle by their leg. While preparations were being made for extrication the PT was assessed and determined to be non-critical. The vehicle was stabilized, the PT was protected from falling glass and debris and all remaining glass was removed from the vehicle. Crew members used the cutters to remove the vehicle’s roof and the spreaders to displace the door away from the PT’s leg, freeing them. Two PT’s were transported non-emergency to an area hospital for further treatment and evaluation.
