Here is a summary of Brentwood Fire and Rescue’s emergency responses for the period of August 23 through August 28, 2014.

We responded to 45 emergency calls for service.

Saturday, August 23 at approximately 5:10 pm:

E4 was dispatched on a report of a tree on fire after being struck by lightning.  E4 arrived on scene to find one tree visibly on fire near the back of a construction site.  Crew members deployed 200’ of 1” hand line and extinguished the fire.  With no further hazards E4 returned to service and quarters.

  

Thursday, August 28 at approximately 10:43 am:

E2 was dispatched on a report of car fire on I-65 southbound near the 69 mile marker. E11 responded with E2 to provide manpower as well as traffic control. BFR units arrived on scene to find one car on the shoulder of the road with flames visible from the engine compartment. E11 pulled past the car for fire attack while E2 staged behind the car for traffic control. Crew members extinguished the fire using the CAFS system on E11. Once all hazards had been mitigated BFR units returned to service and control of the scene was transferred to THP.

 ANNUAL BRENTWOOD FIRE & RESCUE DEPARTMENT AWARDS CEREMONY RECOGNIZES SEVERAL FIREFIGHTERS, ONE CITIZEN

The Brentwood Fire & Rescue Department held its annual awards picnic at River Park on Saturday.  The annual event provides an opportunity to recognize dedicated service, unique contributions, and outstanding achievements over the course of the previous year.  Award recipients are nominated by their peers, and those recommendations are evaluated by a committee representing all ranks in the department.

• Captain David Harber, Lt. Derek Hyde, Engineers Jerrod Hawkins, Chris Shore, Daniel Hillis, Jason Pierce, and Andy Frye received Medical Service Awards. The award is presented to crews whose actions in a critical situation directly contributed to the saving of a life.  

• Distinguished Service Awards were presented to individuals who have completed 5, 10, 15, or 20 years of service. Recipients were as follows: 
•  5 Years: FF Scott Barnes, Engineer Toben Nelson, Engineer Jay Williams
• 10 Years: Admin Asst. Robin Forte, Engineer Larry Ritchie, FF Katie Williams
• 15 Years: Lt. Neal Menanno
• 20 Years: FF Dough Goddard 

 

• A Civic Award was presented to Firefighter Josh Smith for his work in organizing the 911 Stair Climb in Nashville to raise money for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. In addition to coordinating the local climb, Josh has traveled throughout the country to assist other cities planning similar events.

• Brentwood resident and Brentwood Country Club lifeguard Kendall Gorman was presented with a Citizens Valor Award for her role in rescuing a child from the country club’s pool on Memorial Day. Shortly after starting her shift, Kendall noticed a child who appeared to be standing on the bottom of the pool. She blew her whistle, entered the water, and brought the young boy to shore with the assistance of lifeguard Jack Holleran. Shortly after being brought to the surface, the child began breathing again and was transported to Vanderbilt Pediatric Center for evaluation where he was released a short time later. Kendall is the daughter of Brentwood City Commissioner Mark and Marci Gorman.

• Finally, Firefighter Doug Goddard was recognized as Brentwood’s 2014 Firefighter of the Year. Doug retired in July after a distinguished 28-year career with the City; eight (8) years as a 911 dispatcher and twenty (20) years as a firefighter. Doug received the largest number of nominations in the history of the FF of the Year award. His dedication, positive attitude, and steadfast professionalism will be sorely missed.

  

 

Chief's Briefing for August 17 through August 22, 2014

Sunday, August 17 at approximately 6:46 am:

All BFR units were dispatched on a report of a residential structure fire.  Initial dispatch information indicated a fire was visible on the outside of a house while smoke filled the inside.  E4 arrived first on scene to find a two story home with light smoke showing.  An occupant of the home indicated they heard an explosion outside of the home near the air conditioning unit.  When crew members investigated the area they found a small area of smoldering mulch, which they extinguished with a water can.  The interior of the home and the crawlspace were checked for possible fire extension using a TIC; none was found.  The cause of the fire was determined to be a malfunctioning air conditioning unit.  Power to the unit was disconnected and the homeowner was advised to contact an HVAC repair specialist.  With all hazards addressed all BFR units returned to quarters. 

Tuesday, August 19 at approximately 5:10 pm:

E4 was dispatched on a medical call for a patient with a decreased level of consciousness.  E4 arrived on scene to find a patient in respiratory distress.  Crew members initiated oxygen therapy and obtained vital signs.  BFR personnel continued to provide supportive care until EMS arrived on scene.  The patient was quickly moved to the ambulance where BFR personnel assisted with EZ IO access and placement of an advanced artificial airway.  EMS transported the patient emergency traffic to a local hospital with one firefighter aboard to assist with patient care and E4 returned to service. 

Wednesday, August 20 at approximately 9:26 am:

E1 was dispatched on a report of a carbon monoxide alarm at a residence.  Crew members arrived on scene and made contact with the homeowner who stated that their carbon monoxide alarm was indicating high levels.  Crew members evaluated the patient medically to check for signs of carbon monoxide poisoning.  The inside of the residence was evaluated using a gas monitor.  Carbon monoxide levels at the front door of the residence were elevated requiring E1 personnel to use SCBA’s to check the interior of the structure.  The gas company was requested to respond to the scene.  Crew members opened windows in the home in an attempt to ventilate the structure.  Carbon monoxide levels began to decrease and the gas company arrived on scene.  Control of the scene was transferred to the gas company and E1 returned to service and quarters.

Monday, August 11 at approximately 7:10 pm:

E1 was dispatched on a fire alarm at a commercial building.  E1 arrived on scene to find a single story commercial structure with no smoke or flames visible.  Occupants of the building were in the process of evacuating when E1 arrived.  BFR personnel investigated the interior of the structure to find a light haze and a strong burning smell.  The cause of the smoke was found to be a malfunctioning water heater.  Power to the unit was cut off by BFR personnel and a thermal imaging camera was used to check for any further hazards.  The owner of the building was advised to have the water heater replaced and E1 returned to service. 

Tuesday, August 12 at approximately 9:23 am:

E2 was dispatched on a report of a vehicle fire in district 1.  Initial dispatch information indicated a vehicle was in the middle of the road and fire could be seen in the engine compartment.  E2 arrived on scene to find a work truck with light smoke showing from the engine area.  BPD on scene indicated that a passerby already discharged an extinguisher on the fire.  BFR personnel investigated the vehicle and found a small fire inside the engine compartment.  Crew members used an ABC fire extinguisher to put out the remaining fire.  Burned debris was removed from the engine compartment to prevent re-ignition.  With no further hazards command of the scene was transferred to BPD and E2 returned to hazards. 

Thursday, August 14 at approximately 11:03 am:

E1 was dispatched on a medical call for a report of a patient with an altered level of consciousness.  E1 arrived on scene and initiated patient care.  The patient was found to be confused and lethargic.  Crew members obtained vital signs then initiated IV access for medication administration.  E1’s paramedic administered medication which improved the patient’s condition within 60 seconds.  EMS arrived on scene and patient care was transferred.  E1 assisted EMS with further on scene care and patients reassessment.  EMS transported the patient to a local hospital and E1 returned to service. 

Thursday, August 14 at approximately 3:48 pm

E4 was dispatched on a medical call for a report of a patient having an allergic reaction.  E4 arrived on scene and quickly made patient contact.  Once vital signs were obtained the patient was given medication to improve their breathing and IV access was established by BFR personnel.  The patient’s respiratory effort greatly improved after medication administration.  EMS arrived on scene and the patient was moved to the ambulance.  Patient care was transferred to EMS personnel and E4 crew members assisted with further on scene care.  EMS transported the patient to a local hospital and E4 returned to service.
